EV200-0037G-S2: High-Power 3.7kW (5HP) Single Phase Vector VFD
Why Choose This 3.7 kW (5HP) Single Phase VFD?
Solve the “No 3-Phase” Problem: Ideally suited for locations where 3-phase power is either unavailable or too expensive to install. It effectively functions as a solid-state phase converter with added speed control benefits.
Better Than Rotary Phase Converters: Unlike noisy and inefficient rotary phase converters, this VFD provides balanced 3-phase output, precise speed regulation, soft starting (no light dimming), and motor protection in a silent, maintenance-free package.
Optimized for Heavy Loads: With a rated input of 32A, this drive is built to handle the high current draw of 5HP motors. Standard 2.2kW drives would instantly trip on overcurrent if connected to these loads.
Integrated Process Control: Features built-in PID control for constant pressure water/air systems and a Simple PLC for automating basic machine cycles (e.g., forward-stop-reverse loops) without external controllers.
Typical Application Fields

Reciprocating Air Compressors
Provides a soft start for 5HP workshop compressors, eliminating the massive inrush current that trips breakers. (Note: Ensure the compressor unloader valve is working correctly).

Hydraulic Presses
Drives the hydraulic pump motor, allowing for energy-saving idle modes. The VFD can slow the pump down during the cooling or holding cycle, reducing oil heat and electricity usage.

Large Manual Lathes & Mills
Perfect for retrofitting older 5HP geared-head lathes (like 14×40 or larger) to run on single-phase power with the added benefit of variable speed for fine finishing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What size wire and breaker do I need for the EV200-0037G-S2?
Because this is a 5HP single-phase input drive, it draws significant current (rated 32A). You should use a dedicated circuit with a 40A or 50A circuit breaker and a minimum 8 AWG (8.4mm²) copper wire for the input to prevent voltage drop and overheating.
2. Can I use this on a 5HP air compressor?
Yes, but air compressors are “hard start” loads. You must ensure the unloader valve is functioning to release head pressure before starting. We recommend oversizing the VFD for compressors, but if using this 3.7kW drive, ensure Vector Control (SVC) is enabled (P0-01=0) and set a short acceleration time (e.g., 3-5 seconds) to get past the startup friction quickly.
3. Does this unit support a braking resistor?
Yes, the EV200 models rated 3.7kW and above typically come with a built-in braking unit. You can connect a dynamic braking resistor (e.g., 400W 150Ω, check manual for exact spec) to the PB and (+) terminals. This is highly recommended for high-inertia loads like saws or centrifuges to prevent “Overvoltage” faults during deceleration.
4. My motor is 380V, can I use this?
No, this VFD outputs 3-phase 220V. You cannot use it on a 380V-only motor. However, many 5HP motors are “dual voltage” (e.g., 220V/380V or 230V/460V). Check your motor nameplate. If it allows re-wiring the jumpers to “Low Voltage” (often Delta/Δ configuration), then you can use this VFD.
Quick Start Guide (How-To)
Warning: High Input Current! Ensure wiring connections are tight.
Step 1: Installation
Mount the VFD vertically on a metal backplate. Allow 100mm clearance top/bottom. Do not mount inside a sealed box without external ventilation fans, as this unit generates significant heat.
Step 2: Wiring
Input: Connect Single Phase 220V (Live/Neutral) to L1, L2. Use 8 AWG wire.
Output: Connect Motor (U, V, W) to U, V, W.
Braking (Optional): Connect the resistor to PB and (+).
Step 3: Motor Parameters (Critical) Power on. Press PRG to enter programming.
P1-01: Set to 3.7 (Motor Power).
P1-02: Set to 220 (Motor Voltage – IMPORTANT).
P1-03: Set to Motor Amps (e.g., 14.5A) from nameplate.
P1-04: Set to 50.00 or 60.00 Hz.
P1-05: Set to 1440 or 1750 RPM.
Step 4: Auto-Tuning
Set P0-01 = 0 (Sensorless Vector Control).
Set P1-37 = 1 (Static Auto-tune).
Press RUN. The VFD will energise the motor (without spinning) to measure resistance.
Step 5: Setup Complete
Set P0-02 = 1 for external terminal control (switch) or 0 for keypad control.
Start the machine and check the current draw on the display (press ‘Shift’ to view ‘A’).
Core Features & Advantages
High Power Density (5HP Single Phase): Engineered to convert a standard 220V single-phase line into 220V three-phase power with a continuous output current of 17.0A. This allows you to run heavy industrial 5HP motors at full torque on single-phase power.
Built-in Braking Unit: Unlike smaller models, this 3.7kW unit typically includes a built-in braking chopper. By simply connecting an external braking resistor to the PB and (+) terminals, you can achieve rapid stopping for high-inertia loads like flywheels and saw blades.
High-Torque Vector Control (SVC): Uses advanced Sensorless Vector Control to provide 150% starting torque at 0.5Hz. This is critical for overcoming the static friction (“stiction”) of heavy machinery during startup, such as loaded conveyors or compressors.
Independent Air Duct Cooling: Features a straight-through vertical cooling channel that isolates the heat sink from the PCB. This protects sensitive components from conductive dust and stone powder, significantly extending lifespan in harsh environments.
Compact Narrow Body: Despite its high power, it maintains a compact footprint (approx. 85.5mm width), supporting side-by-side installation. This saves valuable space in control cabinets compared to traditional bulky phase converters.
Robust Overload Capability: Rated for 150% overload for 60 seconds, ensuring reliability during temporary load spikes common in cutting and grinding operations.
